Aiyoku

Disclaimer : I do not own bleach, if I did, Ukitake would wear a pink t-shirt that says “slut” in pretty white print.
Author's note : This takes place when Hinamori is about 23 (in human years). The war with the Vastroode and Aizen has been over for about 4 months or so. I tried to make this as believable as possible. Please R&R.

Chapter 1 : Transcendence

Hinamori woke with a start, in a dripping cold sweat. The nightmares had struck again, claiming her unconscious as victim for what seemed like the thousandth time. They were always the same, always reminding her of that time, that betrayal. She had overcome the waking thoughts long ago, but remained haunted in her sleep by her long dead superior.

Using the sheet to wipe the sweat from her brow she rose, she shook off any remaining thoughts of Aizen. She rose and stretched, her lithe form a pale white in the darkness of the room. She crept her way to the bathroom and started up the shower. Soon it was steamy hot, and she clambered inside the small showering alcove. The slight burn from the hot water was welcome on her skin, and the pleasant scent of soap was greatly appreciated by the young female. Lathering it and spreading it all over her body, her hands came to the scar. It was the only one on her body, and she despised it. She covered the sword scar with soap, wishing it to wash away with the rest of her grime covering her body.

Thoughts of what would happen during the coming day flooded her mind. It was an important day for her, and all of Soul Society. Today was her inauguration ceremony for the position of 5th division captain. After many years of fighting with demons, both physically and in her mind, she was finally going to take hold of the position she both feared and longed for. While excited, a part of her wanted to run and hide. She kept telling herself that she was strong, and deserved this position, but the butterflies in her stomach just wouldn't leave. She sighed and turned the water off.

She had barely stepped out of the shower when she heard the knocking. Wrapping the towel around herself, she flung open the door. A rather stunned Kira blushed deeply at the sight.

“G-good morning, Hinamori-san. Aren't you ready yet?”

“Aren't you a bit early, Kira-kun? It's not even 5 yet..”

“I know, I just thought that you might want to visit the graves today, you know, before the ceremony. You're really into all that auspicious stuff, aren't you?”

Hinamori had wanted to visit the graves of the captains of the past to ask their favor... but she hadn't really planned on going with the blonde 3rd division taicho. She supposed a bit of company wouldn't hurt, though, especially since it meant that someone would be with her this morning. She already knew it was going to be a hard day.

“Alright, I'm coming. Come in though, Kira, I still have some things to do before I leave.”

She ushered Kira into the cramped living room and pushed a pot of tea towards him before heading back to her room to finish dressing. Pulling on a fresh uniform and quickly running a brush through her freshly washed hair, Hinamori assessed her appearance and nodded to herself, satisfied.

Minutes later Kira closed the sliding door as the two stepped out into the crisp morning air. It was a cold fall morning, and Hinamori doubted it would warm up much after the sun rose. They set off across Seireitei towards the graveyard, where they would find the memorials to fallen captains.

Hinamori unlatched the gate separating the graves of the normal shinigami from those of the captains. Kira seemed to understand that she wanted a bit of time to herself, so he busied himself by going to the grave for his parents. Hinamori paused at each one and asked each captain to watch over her and guide her, but when she came to the memorials near the end, she nearly lost it. Three small stone pillars stood side by side, relatively recent and still quite readable. They read Ichimaru Gin, and Aizen Sousuke.

She still didn't understand why they had even been allowed memorials here, they had deserted the gotei 13, after all. However, after they had been destroyed by the forces of the gotei 13, certain captains and vice captains had convinced Yamamoto to allow monuments put up to them for the family and friends left behind. Hinamori secretly wished that she had the balls that some of the other shinigami had so she too could spit on their grave, but her innate kindness and natural respect for everything prevented her from doing such a horrid act. Still, she hoped that the bastards were miserable wherever they were. Passing over the graves of the traitors, Hinamori arrived at the final grave, the newest one in the entire Gotei 13 graveyard. It belonged to Yamamoto himself, who had passed on several months earlier from old age. It had been one of his final acts to nominate Hinamori for the position of taicho of the 5th division, something she eternally grateful for.

**Flashback**

Hinamori settled in the chair in the powerful 1st division captain's office. She had been expecting him to lecture her on her revelation of her bankai during a recent battle, which she had achieved without telling anyone, but the slightly pleasant look on the old man's face told her that she had a different reason for being there.

“Hinamori-fukutaicho, I suppose I shouldn't beat around the bush on this one, it would seem that you have a lot to do. I have nominated you for the position of captain of the 5th division. You fit all the requirements, and I feel that you will make a fine leader. At the recent captain's meeting, it was voted on, and every captain in the room decided that having you fill that position was in the best interest for Seireitei. We hope that you agree, and accept.”

Hinamori paused a moment, considering the proposal. She looked to her feet.

“I am sorry, Yamamoto-taicho, but I decline.”

Yamamoto's eyebrows rose at this statement, but a look of understanding soon fell across his face.

“Hinamori, I feel that you should reconsider. I understand that you do not wish to take this position because of possible sentimental ties to it's prior captain, but I also know that you are perfectly capable of leading this division in a new direction, which is precisely what it needs to bring it back to life. Choosing another leader to take over this division is not a good idea. You have fought with these men for years, and have earned their respect and admiration. They see you as their authority, and it would be very difficult for a new captain to have to issue orders through his vice captain because no one will listen to him.”

He paused before speaking again.

“I want you to accept this for yourself as well. It will prove to you that your are capable of overcoming what happened. Taking this position from Aizen will allow you to finally accept what he did, and that he was not worthy of having you as a vice captain. It will allow you to grow. Think of it like this : it will allow you to rise above him, it will give you transcendence.”

Hinamori looked up again at the aging man and nodded, renewed with strength.

“Alright, I'll do my best.”

**End of Flashback**

Hinamori kneeled before the grave and said her condolences, secretly thanking the man for his effort, but wondering if she would actually be able to go through with it. Rising, she sighed as she thought about the preparations she needed to do before the ceremony that afternoon. She found that Kira was already gone, no doubt to his division to do the day's paperwork before the ceremony forced him to abandon it later in the afternoon. So much for going with her to the graves, she thought, he hadn't spoke to her since they got there.
