Marrying Death

Authour notes: 1) This is not only my first Bleach fan fic, it is my first Adult fan fic, so please be honest with me. Let me know if I've got the characters right. I can handle constructive criticism, but please, no flaming. Thank you.

2) After reading ShadowandFlamePanther's story, From Stranger to Wife, I've decided to go with a Renji/OC pairing as well as one other(but that's a surprise). Also, her fic is where I got the idea for Renji to go to the Americas. She came up with that, not me. I just thought it would make for a pretty cool story.

"WHAT?!"

Byakuya held in a sigh of annoyance.

"Is there something wrong with your ears, Lieutenant?"

"No! I just thought ya said there's a new law sayin' all the Captains and Lieutenants have ta marry!"

Byakuya stared at the irate red-head.

"All male Captains and Lieutenants, yes. Someone not from Soul Society."

Renji's jaw dropped, but Byakuya just continued with his paperwork.

"What the hell?! And everyone's just gonna go along with it?!"

Byakuya levelled his cool gaze at Renji. With a suppressed smirk, he noted how his lieutenant snapped his mouth shut.

"It is the law, Renji. I expect you to follow it."

Renji's eyes widened, but he kept his jaw firmly clenched, opting to storm out of the 6th division office instead. Things just kept going downhill for him since Rukia's marriage to that damned Ichigo! Needing to blow off steam, he decided the best place would be the bar he used to go to with the 11th division. At least he could fight someone there. And get drunk. Very, very drunk.

"So, Captain, d'ya want Yumi and me to go find ya a girl, or are ya gonna do it yourself?"

Kenpachi's answering growl had both his 3rd and 5th seats howling with laughter.

"You think it's so funny? How 'bout I make you Lieutenant, Ikkaku? I'm sure Yachiru wouldn't mind if it meant someone else for her to play with."

The bald shinigami paled, and Yumichika laughed so hard, tears formed in his eyes. Kenpachi's roaring laughter rose above the din of the bar.

"To the new Marriage Law! However stupid it is!"

"To the new Marriage Law! However stupid it is!"

Renji recognized the voice of his former captain and a grin broke out over his face. So Kenpachi Zaraki found the marriage law stupid, too. Good, he wasn't the only one. Ordering two bottles of sake, Renji made his way over to the table.

"Oi! Renji! What are ya doin' here? Hear about the new law?"

Ikkaku snorted and Renji's eyebrow twitched. Yumichika leaned forward in his chair, watching the scene intently. Kenpachi poured himself another bowl, tossed it back, then slammed the empty dish on the table. The other three jumped at the sound and he grinned.

"Have a seat, Renji. I hope you brought more sake."

Three hours of drinking had Renji and Ikkaku at each other's throats, Yumichika drunkenly egging them on, and Kenpachi bored.

"Hey! I'm leavin'. Following Yachiru's directions is more fun than this!"

Renji and Ikkaku burst out laughing, their argument forgotten. Yumichika looked up.

"Where's the Captain?"

This had the other two pounding the table and roaring with laughter.

"Seriously. Where did he go?"

"Danica! Earth to Dani! Did you bring a lunch?"

The pale blonde blinked and stared at her best friend for a minute before snapping out of her reverie.

"Hey Jade! Er...lunch...?"

The dark haired girl sighed.

"You forgot your lunch again, didn't ya? Well, come on, let's go sit outside. You can share mine."

Danica carefully put her books in her bag.

"You really don't have to, Jade. I'm fine without lunch."

Jade's eyebrow twitched.

"Like Hell, you are! You waaay too skinny! It's not healthy! No, come on!"

With that, she dragged the blonde girl outside and over to a tree.

"Ahh, it's gorgeous outside! I love summer! And school's almost out! Do you know what you're doin' for next year? Where did you apply?"

Dani let her friend chatter away, enjoying the nice weather.

"...? Dani?...Dani...Dani! Are you even listening?!"

"Eh, what...?"

Jade burst out laughing and shook her head.

"Nevermind. Here, eat this."

Dani stared at the half-sandwich in front of her face.

"It's ham and cheese. With mustard. Are you gonna make me feed you like a baby?"

Dani grabbed the sandwich and took a huge bite, chewing furiously. Jade smirked.

"That's more like it! Here, have some juice. And then we can split dessert! Leftover strawberry-rhubarb pie!"

Jade stretched and yawned, getting to her feet. She held her hand out to help Dani up.

"Do you have any exams this afternoon?"

"Nope. Bio was my last one. What about you?"

Jade grimaced.

"Math. This afternoon. I'm sooo gonna fail..."

Dani chuckled.

"You'll be fine! It's not like you've gotta get the whole thing right! Just enough to keep up your marks."

Jade sighed.

"Yeah, yeah, I know. So, meet me here in two hours? You can sleep over at my place tonight...and then... we can go to the beach tomorrow! Come on! Please?"

Jade latched on to Dani's arm and pulled out the puppy dog eyes. Dani laughed.

"Alright, alright! Just not the puppy dog eyes, you're terrible at them!"

Jade whooped in victory.

"Yess!! Oh shit! I'm gonna be late! See ya later! Wish me luck!"

And with that, Jade rushed off, leaving Dani standing in front of the school.

"Good luck..."

Once, he'd sobered up, Renji decided he'd go the real world. Maybe that creepy old pervert could help him figure things out. He was sneaky, that one. The only problem with his plan was the sight that greeted him when he arrived. Urahara and Yoruichi, and Ichigo and Rukia. It appeared that the two couples were having dinner together. Turning to leave, Urahara's voice stopped him.

"Ah! Renji-san! Have you come to visit?"

Renji slowly turned around.

"Er...yeah...but since you're busy, I'll just come back later."

"Wait! I need some fresh air! We can talk for a minute."

Giving Yoruichi a kiss, he stepped out of the room, sliding the door shut behind him and ushering Renji outside.

"So, Renji...did you need something?"

Renji shifted uncomfortably.

"Er...you heard about the new law in Soul Society?"

Urahara grinned.

"Ah, yes. The Marriage Law? Very interesting...do you need help finding a bride? Is that why you're here? Oh my! This is so exciting!"

Renji glared. Urahara snapped open his fan and fluttered it in front of his face.

"Oh! Renji-kun! You'll frighten all the girls away glaring like that!"

"It's not like I care! The only-- "

Renji suddenly looked defeated, and Urahara stopped his teasing.

"It still bothers you, doesn't it?... Rukia marrying Ichigo..."

Renji sighed.

"I don't think I can stay around here..."

Urahara slowly fanned himself and thought. Suddenly, his eyes lit up and he shut his fan with a loud snap!

"You could try the Americas! Yes, it would be a nice vacation! I've got a gateway that will take you there! Oh! You'll need some warmer clothes! Wait, will you? Is it winter there, or summer...I can never remember..."

Renji blinked.

"What the hell?! You can't remember?! Is it winter or summer?! How hard is it?!"

Urahara smiled.

"So you'll go then."

Renji snapped his mouth shut, and then nodded, looking down at the ground. Urahara wrapped an arm around his shoulders and steered him towards the shop.

"Alright. The gate's inside."

Dani stared from the park bench she was sitting on. A man with vibrant red hair(dressed like he was in some samurai movie) had just walked out of a portal. Right in the middle of the park! Looking around, she noticed that no one else seemed to see him. Was that a sword at his waist?! She screwed her eyes shut and shook her head before opening them again. He was still there! And he was walking towards her! He really wasn't that bad looking. Kind of attractive, actually. Well built, tattooed. His hair looked soft. She blinked. Soft? And then he was sitting on the bench. She stiffened when he placed his sword on the bench between them. He smelled nice. Like sandalwood, maybe, and sweat. She nearly jumped when he let out a loud sigh and leaned forward, resting his chin in his hand. She did jump when his sword started glowing red and then a white baboon with a snake for a tail appeared.

"Wh-what the hell is that?!"

Renji started, and then stared at girl sitting next to him. Long pale blonde hair and cornflower blue eyes. Slender, and judging by how long her legs were, she was probably a little on the tall side. Not bad looking overall.

"You can see me?"

"Yes."

"You can see Zabimaru?"

He placed a hand on the baboon's head. She blinked.

"Za..bi..ma..ru..? Is that his name? What is he?"

He grinned.

"He's my Soul Slayer."

"Soul...are you a ghost?"

He scratched the back of his head.

"A ghost...? I guess so...kinda...I'm Renji. Renji Abarai, Lieutenant of the Sixth Division in Soul Society."

"Soul...Society...? Lieutenant?"

"Ya haven't told me your name yet."

The girl started.

"Oh! I'm Dani...erm...Danica Sloan."

Renji smiled.

"Da..ni..ka..hmm...pretty name."

Dani blushed.

"Th-thank you. Um..."

Renji looked at her strangely.

"Hasn't anyone ever complimented ya before? Ya don't have ta blush just 'cause I said your name was pretty."

Dani blushed harder.

"Uh..sorry..."

"Che. Never mind. Look, I know ya just met me, but you're the first person I've met that can see me, and I've sorta got this problem..."

Dani just watched him. He blushed under her scrutiny, then decided that blunt was the way to go.

"Look. I come from this place called Soul Society. It's where souls go when they die. There's souls called Shinigami, death gods, who help send souls where they belong. The Shinigami are divided into 13 divisions, and each division has a Captain and a Lieutenant. Well anyways, there's this new law saying all Captains and Lieutenants have ta marry someone from the real world...so I came here...and since you're the only one that can see me..."

"You want me to marry you?"

Renji blushed harder.

"It's not like it has ta be forever or anything! An' ya can leave Soul Society whenever ya wanna!"

Dani smiled.

"Okay."

"An' I wouldn't force ya ta do anything ya don' wanna...wait...'o..kay'..? Did you say yes?"

Dani laughed and nodded her head.

"It's not like I've got anything really interesting to do now that school's out. I just gotta tell Jade..."

Suddenly, she glanced at her wrist. Panic flew across her features.

"Shit! Two hours! Jade!"

With that, she grabbed her bag and took off across the park. She paused, and turned, running on the spot.

"Come on! Hurry!"

Renji snatched up Zabimaru and chased after her...
