Silky Black and Cherry Blossoms

Second chapter of my story, this time Renji's point of view: Renji returns from a mission and finds it a little difficult to get to Kuchiki-taichou.

=========================================================================

02.SILKY BLACK AND CHERRY BLOSSOMS

Renji had been the whole night in the human world on Shinigami business, nothing much, just a simple teaching mission with some new recruits. A couple of easy manageable hollows and now he was back in Soul Society. He headed towards Headquarters to present his report on the mission he had carried the night before to Kuchiki-taichou. As he entered the Headquarters he was greeted with enthusiasm and friendliness as always.

"Abarai-fukutaichou how was the mission?"

"Back already Fukutaichou?"

"Caught many hollows?"

"Any cute girls in the students, Fukutaichou?"

Renji stopped for awhile to chat, answering to the men’s questions.

"Yeah, it was an easy, smooth night; piece of cake" he boasted "caught a few hollows that had been doing some ruckus in the area, no sweat." And feeling enthusiasm he continued "Sure there were cute girls, none that would fall for you thou" he joked "…but I’m sure that with my charm I’ve convinced some to join Gotei 6."

"If you had used your zanpakutou maybe they would join us, with your charm I’m afraid this year we won’t have many applications to the Gotei 6" the man joked back. Renji laughed loudly at the man’s response.

"Well I’m sure if I’d show them my zanpakutou they’d come running" and he grinned and winked at them knowingly. But truth be told in these past few times it was not the girls that made Renji’s blood race through his veins. Well, it was not the boys either. It was this one very powerful and intimidating man: Kuchiki Byakuya! He sighed calmly, as if finishing the laugh and asked:

"Is Kuchiki-taichou in his office?" and quickly added: "I should report to him." The three men still laughing and kidding took a little too much time to answer, or so it seemed to Renji.

"It wasn’t that funny" he stated, a little impatient as he turned and started walking towards the Taichou’s office. "See you later then!"

"Kuchiki-taichou isn’t in his office" Renji stopped cold in his tracks

"Is he out on some assignment?" he turned back to them.

"None that we know of." One of the men answered, still smiling from the previous joke.

"So, did he say he was going to come in later this morning?"

"No" said another one whipping tears from his eyes. They were beginning to get on his nerves. Kuchiki-taichou was always on time, sometimes even earlier, but never NEVER late.

"He said he had some Kuchiki business to attend this morning." The third man finally answered.

Renji felt a heavy press on his chest, a press he hadn’t even noticed, being lifted and asked menacingly:

"Why wasn’t I informed? I’m his Fukutaichou, I should know this things!"

"Abarai-san you were out on the human world all night and didn’t have an accurate time for arrival. There was no way to inform you!" Again the third man answered looking at him in a, somewhat condescending way.

"Yes, of course" Renji felt stupid, why had he reacted in such a childish manner. Him obsessing over Kuchiki Byakuya was starting to make him react in idiotic ways.

"Of course…right… so since he’s… the Taichou is not in I’ll just go home, to much time in the human world, you know… I’ll report to him later." He tried to act his usual self but had the feeling it wasn’t working quite well. "Well see you later." And headed for the exit.

"See you Abarai-fukutaichou" the men answered.

"He’s acting weird."

"Maybe too much time in the human world does that to you!"

"Yeah, maybe..."

Renji left the building and headed home to get some rest. But the previous conversation and his absurd reactions kept bugging him. He didn’t really know when this, this… thing, better just call it like this for now, for Kuchiki-taichou had started.

Suddenly he had realized he thought of him in new, different ways. He enjoyed being in his presence, even if it was always cold and distant. He had even endeavoured in extremely dangerous missions, such as to try and feel the texture of the Kuchiki Scarf the infamous, "Ginpaku Kazahana no Uzuginu"; did it really feel as smooth and silky as it looked, did it had a characteristic smell or did it absorb the green tea and cherry scent of its owner?

Renji had recently discovered that it did. How could it not, always around that lean, clear neck. Yes, discovering the distinctive smell of Kuchiki-taichou had been another one of Renji’s absurd and ridiculous quests.

He had been alerted to the Taichou’s particular scent by its absence. It was a day like any other only something felt wrong and missing, he tried all day to identify it until he realized it didn’t smell of Kuchiki Byakuya. The Taichou had been out on some Gotei affairs, so Renji hadn’t seen him or smelled him and it affected him in a way he just hadn’t thought possible.

From that day he had done all in his power to discover the exact scent. First he started to smell the air every time Kuchiki-taichou passed by, only the scent was too subtle and frail to be acquired in such manner, and he also seemed like a dog sniffling the air which earned him some frowns from the man himself as well as some crude remarks from the Shinigamis around. He then changed tactics and tried to smell every object that came in close contact with the Taichou; pieces of furniture, papers and documents, walls, shoji doors and still the scent eluded him.

Once he thought he had manage to discern it in a sheet of paper that Kuchiki-taichou had handed him, but it was to dim to for analysis.

Until one day, one very hot day, he entered the Taichou’s office and found the Taichou’s haori set behind a chair. Taken by a sudden urge, Renji almost leaped across the room, gently and reverently grabbing the robe and raising it to his nose, he discovered the scent that had evaded him for so long.

He had a visceral response to the smell, his guts twisted in such a manner he thought he would drop dead on the spot; it smelled of Kuchiki Byakuya. It smelled of green tea and cherry blossom. He was so enthralled by this that he didn’t notice when the Taichou returned to the room. When asked what he was doing, he stuttered a poorly made excuse and left the room in a hurry.

From that day forward he’d recognize that scent anywhere. His nose seem to be programmed to identify only the Taichou’s scent, and Renji found himself knowing when Kuchiki-taichou was nearby or had been in recently.

His latest mission of discovering the hidden treasures of Kuchiki Byakuya was to try and feel the smoothness of his black silky hair...

The Fukutaichou found himself in from of his house, sighed heavily and made his way in. Took a quick bath, ate something he found left in the kitchen and hit the sack for a dreamless and soundless sleep. Or so he had hoped; his dreams were filled with Taichou and ended up not resting much.

Later that day he returned to Gotei 6 Headquarters and headed directly to the Main Office. Knocked and received no reply:

"Kuchiki-taichou?" He inquired the silent door. He knocked once again, pressed the doorknob and, for he’s shock, found it locked. "Kuchiki-taichou are you there?" He asked, now confused, the Taichou rarely ever locked the door.

"Abarai-fukutaichou" A voice sounded behind him, not the one he had hopped to hear, he turned to see a small female Shinigami looking back at him:

"Yes?!"

"The Taichou said he’d be very busy this afternoon and didn’t wish to be disturbed" she stated.

"I have a report to deliver to him" he stated back firmly.

"Oh, is that the report on your visit to the human world?"

"Yes, that’s right" He said hopeful, he had to report back it was standard procedure. His hopes shattered immediately:

"The Taichou said you know how to proceed and need not report to him."

"Right, then I’ll go…report…or… " he was stuttering again, this was not like him and it was becoming a habit. He left the door of the Taichou’s office and headed down the corridor aimlessly.

He stopped by his office, filled the report of the previous night outing, resolved some other bureaucratic questions, putting aside a pile of documents that required the Taichou’s approval, and tried to immerse his mind with all sort of business other than those tormenting him. This kept him occupied well into the evening.

Still feeling restless and aimless, Abarai Renji headed for the Training Hall to let his Zabimaru howl, sending another look at the cold, still closed, door.

Renji couldn’t seem to gather his concentration; he swung and swished his zanpakutou but was too distracted to even realize what he was doing. This usually helped him relax and focus but the turmoil inside his mind and heart today was too intense.

These feelings towards Kuchiki-taichou were starting to get out of hand. First the nonsense of following him around to get his scent, or the feel of his scarf and later of his hair; then the exaggerated reactions every time the Taichou was mentioned and lately the stuttering around the man himself. He was not like this, he seemed a stupid girl with a crush on her senpai, he was not liking it! Renji stomped across the room, throwing his sword around not achieving any of the piece of mind desired.

And now, why was that the fact that Kuchiki Byakuya-taichou hadn’t shown his face to him in more than, than… a sudden realization hit Renji like a full blown Bankai. He hadn’t seen his Taichou for more than three full days now. Had Kuchiki-taichou realized his awkward behaviour? Was this why his door had been locked today? Had he been avoiding Renji?!

A low, defeated moan escaped Abarai-fukutaichou’s lips as he swung his zanpakutou discouraged. Of course he was avoiding him, who wouldn’t…?

A light breeze brought shivers to Renji’s sweat covered back as well as the known scent of green tea and cherries. A slight creak of the floor and the slide of the shoji door alerted the Fukutaichou of the presence of another person in the proximities.
A long silent sigh followed by a hoarsely whispered increased the shivers on his back:

"Renji!"
