Chapter Twenty-One
“Are you still thinking about that man?” asked Kenpachi.
“I can’t stop thinking about him. I’m so close and yet an invisible wall is blocking me.” sighed Izuru sadly. Kenpachi grunted at the sound of his lover’s despair.
Izuru glanced at Kenpachi. It wasn’t fair that he kept obsessing over finding the man that led the group to kill his parents. It had been six months since his mental breakdown. Life had settled down. Izuru had moved in with Kenpachi permanently. The transition had not been easy. In fact, it had been a complete nightmare. Izuru wasn’t sure if Renji was ever going to stop bitching about his relationship with Kenpachi. Yachiru never stopped talking either. She was the polar opposite of Renji, she never stopped talking about how happy she was that Pretty-chan had joined the family. Things were finally beginning to calm down.
“You haven’t gotten any lead as to how to find this person. You know for a fact that if he was or is part of Central 46, finding him will be like looking for a needle in a haystack. If he doesn’t want to be found, he won‘t be.” said Kenpachi, taking a sip of sake from his cup.
“I know, but I have to try. I can’t go after Central 46, so I have to go after Shu Himura.” argued Izuru.
“Keep your voice down. I can only offer so much protection. We are both officers in Gotei 13. We are not above the eyes and ears of Central 46. They are our governing body underneath the emperor after all.” growled Kenpachi.
Izuru sighed. It really was a lot to ask of Kenpachi. To knowingly discuss possibly treasonous ideas with him was putting them both at risk. Izuru decided that he would ask one last favor of his captain. There was no guarantee that Captain Ichimaru would help but Izuru was out of options. This was his final lead. After this there was nothing.
“Your parents wouldn’t want you to keep putting yourself at risk, Izuru.” commented Kenpachi.
“You are right, but I can’t live with myself until at least Shu Himura is punished.”
“And then what? Go after Central 46? After the emperor? When does it end? None of it will bring them back or bring them honor. Believe me when I say this Izuru. In the end, revenge leaves you cold.”
“I have to do this, Kenpachi. Its alright if you no longer want a part of it. This won’t interfere with our relationship.” said Izuru. It hurt a little to say it. Izuru wanted Kenpachi in this with him. The larger man’s presence was a comfort to him.
“I ain’t leaving you alone. I’m just saying, you need to know the consequences of what you are doing. That emptiness inside you, it doesn’t go away with the blood of your enemy. It just grows bigger. You keep going for more and more trying to fill it up. In the end, you become the monster that you sought to vanquish.” sighed Kenpachi.
Pulling Izuru into his arms, Kenpachi stroked the soft blonde hair. Izuru relaxed in the embrace. To think that this man had such a gentle side. Only a handful of people ever saw it. Izuru, Yachiru, Ikkaku , and Yumichika, to name a few. Towards anyone else, he was a hard ass of the highest degree.
A knock on the door ended the interlude. Izuru rose and went to see what the problem was. It was almost a standing rule that there had better be a damn good reason to interrupt Kenpachi after dinner had ended. It was one of the few quiet times he had with Izuru. Citizens of Seireitei might not realize it, but Kenpachi actually ran his division. He didn’t shirk his duties onto the backs of his subordinates.
“What did the little bastard want, Izuru?” yelled Kenpachi, from the other room.
“He gave me an missive from Captain Ichimaru.” answered Izuru as he unwrapped the letter. Inside was an address and a note from his captain.
Same rules apply, read it, destroy it, and do with the information what you wish. Oh, and consider this little gift a ‘wedding’ present for you and Zaraki.
G.I.
Izuru gave a gasp, It was the address of Shu Himura. This was his chance to achieve what he had searched for. Kenpachi stood took the missive and read the contents.
“Son of a bitch. I don’t know what shit Ichimaru has his fingers in but you be careful around him. That bastard is dangerous if he can get all this classified information to you.” growled Kenpachi as he tossed the entire package into the fireplace.
“You’re going aren’t you?” asked Kenpachi after several minutes of silence.
“I have to.”
“This man is a killer. He’s not a member of the thirteen squads. He is under the direct command of Central 46. Do you understand?” demanded Kenpachi.
“I understand the risks but I have to do this.”
“I’m going with you.”
“I told you that you didn’t have to do this anymore. You have no obligation to come with me.”
“Fucking annoying little shit. Do you honestly think I could let you go alone and possibly die. I respect your fighting skills and it terrifies me how powerful you could become. But you don’t have a killer’s soul. It wouldn’t be easy for you to take that last step across the line.” sighed Kenpachi.
“And you do?”
“I’ve had the soul of a killer for longer than I can remember.”
Izuru’s eyes stared at the ground. That was a conversation neither had ever had. Kenpachi’s past was something neither wanted to explore. Some things were best left in the dark.
“Thank you, Kenpachi.” smiled Izuru. This time, the smile actually reached his eyes. It had been awhile since it had done that. Kenpachi nodded and pulled Izuru towards the bedroom. Lying on the bed, Kenpachi curled his body around that of his lover. They lay there, the sound of each other’s breathing lulling the other to sleep. That was how it was with them. Violence and tenderness combined together in their relationship. What one needed, the other supplied.
The next morning, Izuru and Kenpachi made their way down the streets of one of the less reputable Rukon districts. Kenpachi seemed more familiar with the area than Izuru, so he let the larger man take lead. After stopping several times for directions, due to Kenpachi’s disgraceful lack of a sense of direction, the two came upon a rickety shack. Calling it a shack was being kind. The place was nearly in shambles. If anyone actually lived there, Izuru would have been surprised.
Walking up to the door, Izuru knocked and waited. No one answered. Kenpachi pushed the blonde aside and rapped his fist harshly against the ancient wood.
“Come out of there, you worthless piece of shit.” yelled Kenpachi.
“K-Kenpachi?” questioned Izuru.
“Well, you weren’t planning on exchanging pleasantries with the man, were you?”
“I’m not sure if this man is even one of them. I wont know until I see his face.”
Kenpachi huffed and crossed his arms. Izuru laughed at the sight. The man was obviously pouting. It took a trained eye to know what they were seeing. Izuru shook his head and reached up to knock again when the door flew open. There standing before him was a face from his past, a face that haunted his darkest nightmares. If his face wasn’t already burned into Izuru’s mind, the white scar sliced across his nose was. Though, the last time Izuru had seen the mark it was freshly cut and bleeding.
“You…” whispered Izuru.
“What do the shinigami want with me?” growled the raggedly dressed man.
“My name is Izuru Kira.” said Izuru in a surprisingly sturdy voice.
The man’s eyes widened. Izuru’s features had changed but the name said it all. He knew. He remembered what he had done. The man reached for his weapon. Izuru lurched away, drawing Wabisuke from his sheath. Kenpachi followed in suit.
“How did you find me?” growled the man before lunging in a full out attack. If he actually wanted an answer or was just verbalizing his shock, is anyone’s guess. Izuru didn’t bother to answer. He simply continued to block each attack and return some of his own.
“You are actually going to try to kill me. Do you know what they will do to you? They may have abandoned me but my death wont go unnoticed.” stated Shu.
“You think we don’t know that. And yet we are still here. My family will have some peace after today.” retorted Izuru.
“Yes, they will get to see you again. Did you know that your mother begged so sweetly before I bashed her face in?” purred Shu.
Izuru saw red. He drew back his zanpakuto and lifted him in the air.
“Raise you head, Wabisuke.” growled Izuru. The weapon contorted and reformed. No longer the average appearing katana. Now, Wabisuke was shaped like a square with one side missing. The bladed edge of the weapon on the inside of the shape. To the untrained eye, this was a weapon that wasn’t deadly in the least.
Few people actually knew the enormous power that was contained in the weapon. One strike for Wabisuke would double the weight of whatever it touched, living or inanimate. Such an unassuming weapon, in the right hands could be deadly.
“What are you going to do with that, boy?” asked Shu.
Izuru smiled. Shu’s eye’s narrowed and he charged once again. Kenpachi remained on the sidelines. He was prepared to join in at some point. But for now, this was Izuru’s fight. If his lover was to get any peace from this encounter, he needed to actually participate in the end result.
Izuru parried the attack with Wabisuke and struck Shu’s sword arm. The attack was a mere grazing of metal against flesh. It barely touched the arm. However, that was all that he needed. Shu froze. He struggled to lift the arm. It now weighed twice as much as it had before touching Wabisuke.
“What the fuck did you do?”
“My zanpakuto has a special ability when released. It doubles the weight of anything it touches. You weapon now weighs twice as much as it did before I parried the blow. Your arm, which Wabisuke barely touched also now is doubled in weight.” answered Izuru.
“You don’t fight fair?” asked Shu.
“Were you fair when you murdered my family? Were you fair when you left me for dead, to watch my father die before my eyes? Was that fair?” screamed Izuru, tears now pouring from his face.
“It was orders.”
“Orders to brutalize my mother and disembowel my father?” growled Izuru, his eyes flaring with pain and anger. The two mixing together in a dangerous combination.
“They didn’t say how we had to kill them. I figured why not have a little fun.” taunted Shu.
The man knew the angrier Izuru got, the more likely it was that he would slip up. Taunting was the best and easiest way to force unthinking action from an opponent. If anger clouded the mind then it was easier to overcome them. Kenpachi’s eyes narrowed and tightened his grip on his zanpakuto. He would intervene if Izuru was in danger.
Izuru lunged forward and struck his blunted blade against the right leg twice and the right arm once more. Now Shu’s right arm and leg were both useless to him. Shu slumped against the ground. The man knew he was in a state in which he had no hope of defending himself. A dark gleam entered his eye. If he couldn’t win in battle, then he would win with trickery.
“Have mercy on me” whimpered the man, tears of pain in his eyes at the added weight of his arm and leg.
“Why should I?” asked Izuru.
“Please…” he whispered.
Izuru’s hand tightened around Wabisuke grip. He was…uncertain. How could he strike down a man that begged for his life. This man was not innocent in any form or fashion, but in such a state he was as good as unarmed. The confusion and uncertainty of Izuru’s thoughts were evident on his face.
“You have won. Turn me in and I will confess everything before Head Captain Yamamoto.” whimpered the fallen man. Izuru stared for a long time at the glazed eyes of the man before him. Thinking of what his father would do, Izuru made his decision.
“Very well.” he said.
“Thank you.”
Izuru turned to Kenpachi. He smiled a little and lowered his eyes.
“You were right. I don’t have it in me to kill in this way.”
“Hmph…Did you think I was kidding?”
“No, I just….” Izuru’s words stuttered to a halt as Kenpachi flickered past him, the wind from the speed he used was amazing. A wet gushing sounded and Izuru felt blood splash to his face. He turned carefully and saw the body of Shu Himura, headless, fall the ground.
“What?” asked Izuru, his eyes wide.
“He thought to attack with his other arm. Little bastard was able to use his weapon in either hand.” answered Kenpachi as he wiped the blood from his weapon before sheathing it.
Izuru slumped to the ground. Kenpachi had dealt a killing blow with little or no emotion showing on his face. Izuru felt the sudden difference in the two of them.
“Alright, what the fuck is going on in that head of yours?” growled Kenpachi.
“You didn’t even blink an eye as you killed him.” whispered Izuru.
“Well I wasn’t about to wait for him to kill you.” answered Kenpachi.
“I won’t lose you that easily. You being in my life heals my soul. I’m a creature owned by my past. You help make me feel like I’m human. You and Yachiru ground me.” he said, pulling the quivering Izuru in his arms.
“I feel so weak next to you.”
“Fighting is my life. But you make me want to better myself. You aren’t weak. You just have other skills that make you strong. I wouldn’t care this much about a weak person. I fucking know that much.”
“I want you to take me home.” said Izuru
“To your apartment? I know you still have it leased.”
“No, I want you to take me home.”
Kenpachi smiled. Home sounded good. Home was Izuru and Yachiru. His family.
Izuru turned and using a kido spell, burned the body of the Shu Himura. If anyone came looking they would find nothing but the empty shack. For all intensive purposes, Shu Himura was erased from Soul Society.
Izuru had his revenge though it was as Kenpachi had said. It did not fill the gap that was left. He didn’t stop wishing more could be done but, in the end, being with Kenpachi was enough. Central 46 was untouchable. Izuru made a vow to never allow what happened to his family happen again. Even if he couldn’t touch Central 46, he would watch them.
“Come on, kid. Lets go home. I’m sure Yachiru has tortured Yumichika and Ikkaku enough today.” said Kenpachi.
Izuru nodded his head and linked his fingers with those of his lover. Yes, home sounded really good.
