3 is better then 4
Rukia and Renji waited patiently for their fellow shinigami to show up all the while passing small talk about the situation and even when they were kids. Rukia could tell Renji had something he wanted to say but couldn’t for some reason.
“Hey Renji, is there something on your mind? You’ve been quiet for a while.”
Renji did not turn to look at her. He knew doing so would weaken his resolve and turn him into a babbling idiot. His mind raced to find a way to say what he wanted, and then he found it.
“Rukia...how long have we known each other?”
“Almost 100 years, why do you ask?”
“Rukia I wanna tell you something...Rukia...I...”
“WOO! That was fun…but tiring.” Matsumoto said as she pushed a hand through her hair to fix it. While Toshiro looked like the trip hadn’t even affected him, Rangiku was panting. Of all shinigami skills, flash steps weren’t her best one.
“You need to train more Matsumoto, I had to stop three times to wait for you.” Toshiro had his arms crossed and watched his lieutenant catch her breath.
“Maybe if you spent more time training and working and less time drinking, this wouldn’t happen.”
Matsumoto smiled before grabbing her captain in a hug. “But captain we both know that won’t happen! ...oops, I mean yes sir.”
“MATSUMOTO! LET ME GO!”
Rukia cleared her throat alerting the two shinigami to their presence. “Are you guys ready to go?”
Toshiro pulled himself away from his lieutenant to cough and act like nothing happened. Such childish antics were not for the mature, like himself.
“Yes, whenever you two are ready? Are you okay Abarai?”
“….No….Why do you ask?” Renji said, not knowing his eye was twitching from having lost a perfect moment.
“Your eye is twitching.”
“That’s nothing, happens sometimes.”
“Well don’t let it interfere with the mission, understood?”
Renji was grinding his teeth, angry that he lost his chance but sighed and knew that he would get another one some other time.
“Yes sir, understood.”
“Alright, the gate is open and the hell butterflies are here, let’s go.”
All four made their way into the gate listening to the double doors close behind them, knowing that now they couldn’t go back, even if they wanted to.
***Las Noches***
“That is all we have to report Lord Aizen.”
“Thank you, Ulquiorra. I have another mission for you and a separate one for Ryoji.”
Ryoji perked at hearing his name, his one purple eye gazing at Ulquiorra kneeling before Aizen while his other was covered by the remnants of his hollow mask. As he waited for Aizen to give his orders, his touched his mask feeling the horn the protruded from the forehead area and dragging his finger down to the eye socket and finally to the nose horn. His mask made him look like a dinosaur when it was full but now that it was shattered it only covered a quarter of his face. From the most powerful class of menos to a pawn in a shinigami’s army, had he fallen so low? He had even more enormous power thanks to the Hogyoku, but at what cost? His hand went to the hole on his heart where a chain of fate was once placed and then to his side, where his zanpakuto was. His hand touched the tsuba noting that like his mask when it was full had three points, he chuckled to himself noting the number 3 on his right pectoral.
‘Three seems to be my lucky number. Always was, even when I was human.’
“…and as for you Ryoji.”
Ryoji glared at Aizen before remembering who it was that had brought him from his thoughts. He did not like the former shinigami at all, he knew that him and all the arrancar were just expendable pawns, but what he couldn’t understand was why the other Espada couldn’t see it.
“I need you to go take care of a group of shinigami for me.”
“How many are we talking? 2?, 5?, 20?”
“Just four, but one is a captain. I want you to take these four out.”
“Why these four specifically if you don’t mind me asking?”
Aizen smiled, he knew who the four shinigami were and what a blow it would be to Ichigo if they were to be destroyed. “Two of them helped Ichigo destroy several Espada and I would like to see a captain be removed from the picture as well. Can you do it? Or should I send someone else?”
“I can handle it myself, no need for anyone else to try to do a job they can’t.” Ryoji walked out of the throne room, knowing that Aizen loved to get him to do things by insulting him.
“Four shinigami shouldn’t be too bad, might even make good exercise.” A brisk flick of his hand opened a garganta portal, the black swirling energy promising him safe passage to the human world.
“This should be easy.” And with that, Ryoji was gone from Hueco Mundo. Both Ulquiorra and Aizen watched as the 3rd Espada left.
“Lord Aizen, for what purpose would you send him to fight these four shinigami?”
“Just a little experiment, like all vasto lordes he thinks himself superior to all others, plus if he is successful and does destroy these four, then Ichigo will be emotionally broken which will help in my plans.”
Ulquiorra understood and nodded his head, he wouldn’t argue with Aizen’s opinion of the vasto lordes, after all, he was one before becoming an Espada so he knew it was the truth. But he wondered what experiment Aizen was talking about and to what purpose would it fulfill?
As if reading his thoughts Aizen smiled and laced his hands together. “In due time, Ulquiorra. In due time.”
***Karakura Town***
“Well we’re here.” Matsumoto announced, wondering what sort of shopping she should and would do while in the human world.
“Thank you for stating the obvious Matsumoto.” Toshiro knew what was on her mind, and it wasn’t the mission. He thought back to the last time he was in the human world, he met Ichigo’s sister Karin and helped her win a soccer match. For some reason he couldn’t help but think of her, which made him feel weird.
“You’re welcome captain.” Rangiku stuck her tongue out at him, glad that he was apparently deep in thought and couldn’t see her do it.
“Rukia, can you sense Ichigo?” Renji, asked not realizing how stupid his question was.
“Renji, his spiritual pressure is a beacon, to both hollow and shinigami. It’s hard not to sense it.”
“…oh yeah…I forgot.” Renji felt like an idiot at that moment.
“Well I can’t sense his exact location but I can sense the general area he’s in. It seems like he’s with Orihime.” Rukia could feel a sensation in the back of her head but shook it off as the effects of the human world.
“Good, makes it easier on us to find him. Let’s head over to that area and split up, radio in when you find him.” Toshiro wanted to get this over with as soon as possible, the thoughts he was having of Karin were starting to get to him.
“Yes sir.” With that, the four took off, too much in a hurry to feel the faint spiritual pressure that now appeared. Ryoji, stepped out of the garganta hole and looked around. This was his second time in the human world since becoming an arrancar and faint memories of his human life seemed to creep into his mind. He violently shook his head, ridding himself of the memories and refocusing on his mission.
‘Now, which one is the captain?’
