Chapter Eight
Izuru dragged himself into the Division Three main offices the next morning. Unlike most of the lower officers, Izuru chose to reside in an apartment rather than the barracks. That little bit of space after a stressful day was one of the few things that kept him sane. No one was required to stay in the barracks but many chose the option of free room and board rather than paying out of pocket for an apartment or small house. He knew Captain Ichimaru opted to live in the Division but unlike the lower officers he was allowed private living quarters. Izuru would have had the same privilege but still chose to reside in an apartment.
The downside of such living was the walk to the office and on days like today, that walk was pure hell. Though he had drunk enough to relax himself the previous night, Izuru had still tossed and turned through most of the night. Some of his restlessness was due to the disappointing news he had received the earlier in the day. However, he could not deny that most of his restlessness was caused by a certain newly appointed captain of Division Eleven.
Izuru groaned with knowledge that he would be dining with said captain for the next month as payment for the privilege of sorting his archives for him. A dark cloud formed in Izuru’s mind. Why was he the one sorting that division’s past documents and then paying to do so? Izuru wondered briefly if bringing his family justice was worth dealing with the violent man. Pressing fingers to his temples, Izuru chastised himself for even debating the issue. Of course it was worth it. It was…honestly.
Walking in the office, Izuru wasn’t surprised to see Captain Ichimaru already working on the paperwork. They had cut out early and now they would pay for it. Izuru sighed; he really should memo Division One. This really was absurd.
“Captain.” sighed Izuru as he settled into his chair and his own pile of work. Izuru never understood how Captain Ichimaru kept the smile on his face. Izuru, himself, was rare to smile and that was probably why a lot of his friends worried that he was unhappy. Far from it in fact. He was very happy with his life. Smiles were just something he rarely showed anymore. It was too much trouble to smile a fake smile just to ease people’s worries.
Gin glanced at his lieutenant with a grin. Lifting a hand in acknowledgement of his lieutenant, he returned to his work. He really did like the younger man. He was efficient, punctual and not an eyesore like that retarded looked lieutenant of Division Two. Gin shuddered at the thought of that disgusting man being his lieutenant. How Soi Fon dealt with him he would never understand. If he wasn’t already in love with Sosuke, he would have been making plays at Lieutenant Kira.
He and Captain Aizen had been lovers probably before the boy was even born, so that relationship was not worth throwing away over a little fling with the attractive blonde. He sensed Izuru had more than enough on his own plate as is. Gin would honor the secrets his lieutenant wished to keep, for he himself had many secrets that would eventually turn Soul Society on its ear.
Izuru didn’t notice his captain’s contemplating looks. He focused on the mound in front of him. If he could, he would finish all the paper work and spend a few hours working on that horrible archive room before…..dinner. ‘Gods deliver me from my fate.’ Izuru chanted as he signed yet another pointless document.
A noise from the window drew both men’s attention. There standing on the ledge was the adorable Yachiru. Izuru felt his eyes widen. ‘What’s she doing here?’ he thought to himself. The girl in question simply giggled and waved to him.
“See you tonight, Pretty-chan. Ken-chan is so excited.” she called before noticing Byakuya Kuchiki strolling towards his own division. The girl took off from the ledge like a dog after a bone, or in her case, like a child after a bag of candy that the stoic man had begun to carry since meeting the pink haired girl. Gin glanced over at Izuru who was fighting hard not to blush.
“What’s tonight?” asked Gin unable to resist the teasing of his second in command. Izuru mumbled something and Gin felt his grin widen. “I’m sorry I didn’t catch what you said.”
“I said dinner.” mumbled Izuru. Gin lifted an eyebrow. Izuru felt the blush begin to stain his cheeks pink. This really was embarrassing. Gin chuckled at his lieutenant. Izuru ignored his captain and flung himself into his work.
Much to his relief, Captain Ichimaru remained silent and by about two in the afternoon, Izuru was finished for the day. He had worked through lunch in order to get another hour of work completed. Slumping back into his chair, Izuru stretched his tired muscles.
“Leaving early?” smirked Gin. Izuru shot him a deadpan look and with a wave was gone. He estimated working until six in the archive and then taking an hour to wash up before returning to the division for dinner. Four hours didn’t seem like nearly enough to make any progress but it was all he had to work with.
Knocking on the gate of Division Eleven, Izuru waited for an answer. This time for once, the division seemed quiet. A giant man answered the door and Izuru raised a brow.
“Lieutenant Izuru Kira to catalog your archives.” Izuru said calmly, not allowing his nervousness to show. The man eyed Izuru for a moment, then noticing the lieutenant armband nodded and ushered him in.
“Wait here please.” said the large man and Izuru thought it wise to listen to him. A few moments later he returned with too young looking men following him. “This is Ryu and Tachi; Captain Zaraki assigned these two weaklings to help you with whatever the fuck you are doing.”
Izuru glanced at the two. They looked fresh from the academy and were probably unseated members of the division. Help was help. Nodding to the two, they made their way towards the room of dust. Izuru decided that the first order of business would be to relieve the area of the massive amount of dust.
“Alright, you two go get some brooms and dustpans. We need to take care of the dust and cobwebs first.” The two nodded and returned minutes later with several brooms. All three set about cleaning. Izuru wrapped a cloth around his face to keep form coughing and sneezing. The two shinigami followed in suit.
Two hours later, most of the dust and dirt had been cleared from the floors and tops of boxes. Izuru nodded in approval. Now this area would be a lot more pleasant to work in. He was immensely glad that Zaraki had provided him with help. The two boys were actually very pleasant once they were comfortable around Izuru. They continuously talked about their captain and how much they respected him. Izuru nearly laughed at that but thought it wise not to offend the two, since they were working hard to assist him.
“You two, I want to you to start sorting those boxes over there and I’ll try to make sense of these.” said Izuru. He only had about an hour and a half left before he would need to leave to clean up for dinner. Dreading the month of dinners that he had promised Captain Zaraki, Izuru set about sorting through the files. Izuru knew in that moment if the previous captain wasn’t dead already he would kill him. There was no excuse for poorly kept records.
A pink head of hair peeked over his shoulder. Izuru jumped and dropped all the files he held in his hand. How did she move around so silently?
“What are you doing, Pretty-chan?” asked Yachiru.
“Sorting files.” answered Izuru as he attempted to rearrange the dropped files.
“You are eating dinner with me and Ken-chan tonight.” chirped the cheerful child.
“Yes I know.” answered Izuru, annoyed at the evening activities being rubbed in even more.
“Ken-chan is very happy.”
“I’m happy for him.” said Izuru, now having to fight not to snap at the girl. She was only a child and didn’t know any better. Honestly, Izuru was surprised that Head Captain Yamamoto had agreed to allow her to be Zaraki’s lieutenant.
“Yachiru, don’t you think you have bothered Lieutenant Kira enough?” came the deep baritone that belonged to only one man. Turning, Izuru saw Kenpachi Zaraki leaning against the door into the storage room. His arms were akimbo and legs crossed at the ankles. His hair pulled up in multiple spikes and his one visible eye sparkled with mirth. The man exuded sex and that annoyed Izuru all the more. Izuru felt heat pool in his loins and took slow steadying breaths to calm himself. He had never met anyone he responded to so quickly. It was frustrating. Yachiru jumped from Izuru’s shoulder to Kenpachi, laying a sloppy kiss on his cheek before settling on his shoulder. Groaning inwardly, Izuru decided that it was time to go home. There was no way he would get any work done with the captain looking on.
“I think that I am done here for today. I’ll be back for dinner as promised.” said Izuru before breezing past the two and walking quickly home.
Slamming into his apartment Izuru started the shower and waited until the water had heated before stepping beneath the stream. The dust and grim from his cleaning frenzy circled down the drain as the water pelted against his skin. The tight muscles in his shoulders began to relax and he calmed. Taking his lavender and chamomile scented soap; Izuru lazily dragged the cloth over his body. The soothing scents mingled with the warm water to sooth his mind and tease his senses. Many might find his choice of bath wash too feminine but Izuru found the combination to be relaxing and he was not one to care what others thought. The scent wasn’t over powering so unless someone stuck their nose directly on his skin, they wouldn’t be able to tell anyway.
His thoughts roamed ahead to his dinner engagement with Kenpachi. The man was a powerful presence. His body looked massive, but Izuru had seen him and knew that while it was well muscled, it was also lean. Powerful shoulders narrowing into a tight waist and hips, the man while not traditionally attractive, oozed sex and danger. Such a combination caused Izuru’s body to burn up. Shuuhei was the closest Izuru came to his ideal partner. Both Dai and Renji had been too cautious as lovers. They were wonderful lovers and exceptional in bed, but they lacked that hidden nature to push the limits of pain and pleasure. Shuuhei was a bit more open for such things but he too tended to hold back as well.
Izuru suspected that Kenpachi wouldn’t be so cautious and that frightened him a little. Izuru was not in a position to get into an in depth relationship now. His search for the murderers of his parents had to come first. When he had either found them or exhausted every option, then maybe he would settle down. Until then he would keep searching. Shutting off the water, Izuru toweled dry then walked naked into the bedroom. Choosing a pale blue kimono, adorned with dark blue silhouettes of cranes, Izuru dressed for dinner. He wasn’t dressed formally but since he wore his uniform all the time it was nice to wear something different for a change. Brushing out his hair and bangs, Izuru decided he was ready. Grabbing Wabisuke from his stand, Izuru strolled down the road towards Division Eleven.
Arriving at the gate, Izuru was surprised to see Yachiru waiting on him. Hopping form one foot to the other in excitement, the child lieutenant was dressed in a lovely white kimono with pink flowers decorating the sleeves and hem. She looked adorable and for once Izuru could understand what Kenpachi saw in her. Smiling, Izuru bowed courteously to her. The girl blushed and bowed as well, then taking his hand, lead him into the complex. They walked through a series of hallways until they came to a large wooden door. Pushing the door aside, the girl pulled Izuru inside.
The room that they entered surprised Izuru. Polished hardwood floors shone with fresh wax. A low sitting table adored the middle of the room. The walls were decorated by attractive hanging scrolls depicting various scenes of nature. It was not the sort of room Izuru would have expected to find in Division Eleven.
“Surprised?” Izuru swung around to find that Kenpachi had walked up behind him with out his notice…again. The large man had taken down his hair from the wild spikes and it hung to his shoulders in a silky curtain. He too was dressed in a dinner kimono but unlike Yachiru’s his was unadorned with any sort of decoration. The odd eye patch remained.
“Just not the type of room I would expect to find in this division.” answered Izuru truthfully. No reason to lie or sugar coat the truth. Kenpachi burst out in a deep laugh that for some reason softened the lines on his face making him attractive.
“Ain’t that the truth. I had this room decorated within the first week I was captain. Yachiru and I might not look it but we enjoy pretty things.” grinned Kenpachi as his eyes roamed over Izuru. Izuru had the grace to blush at the words. Yachiru giggled and dragged Izuru towards the table. The table was a rich mahogany and elegant carvings adorned it. It was set for three. Sitting down at the place Yachiru indicated, Izuru watched as Kenpachi spoke to a member of his division standing outside his door before joining the two of them.
Ryu, from earlier, brought in a porcelain pot of tea and a small glass of milk. Setting the milk before Yachiru and the pot in front of Kenpachi before bowing and leaving. Kenpachi poured the tea and offered Izuru the cup. Izuru took the cup and jerked as their fingers brushed. Kenpachi grinned but said nothing. Dinner was brought in shortly after and to Izuru’s surprise the entire meal was pleasant. Izuru was not expecting such from the captain. As soon as the dinner ended, Yachiru crawled into Kenpachi’s lap and watched Izuru with happy eyes.
“Ken-chan says that you will have dinner with us every night.” said Yachiru happily.
“For a month, yes, unless I have division business.” answered Izuru taking a sip of the after dinner sake.
“Does that mean you will be my mommy soon?” Izuru choked on the sake as he felt it burn down his windpipe. Struggling to catch his breath and blushing bright red, Izuru shook his head in a negative as Kenpachi nearly burst a gut laughing.
“Yachiru, he would be your second daddy not your mommy.” said Kenpachi with a pat on the small girl’s head. She sucked on her lip for a moment to consider that.
“You aren’t helping any, Captain Zaraki.” growled Izuru.
“Call me Kenpachi when we aren’t working.” grinned the man. Izuru growled but said nothing. Yachiru giggled.
“Zuru sounds like a kitty cat, Ken-chan.” giggled the girl.
“Yes he does. I wonder if he purrs too.” commented Kenpachi with a leer. Izuru blushed and released another growl that sent the little girl into giggles again.
“I think I have satisfied tonight’s quota of dinner.” said Izuru standing. Yachiru’s face dropped and her lip quivered. Kenpachi patted a soothing hand on her head.
“Don’t worry Yachiru, he will be back tomorrow.” she brightened at the statement and lunged into Izuru’s arms. Her surprisingly strong arms gripped his neck in a hug that threatened to suffocate him. Prying her arms away, Izuru set her on the floor and patted her head. Kenpachi stood and escorted Izuru to the gate. Izuru bowed to the captain and turned to leave when a hand on his arm stopped him.
Turning to see the reason, Izuru felt warm lips cover his own. Izuru gasped at the touch and Kenpachi took that moment to dip his tongue inside. Izuru couldn’t think let alone breathe. The tongue in his mouth was warm and tasted faintly of the sake that they had drunk. Izuru felt his eyes drift shut as he leaned into the warmth. Strong hands pulled him close and sharp teeth nipped at his lip, drawing blood. Izuru felt heat flood his loins at the slight pain. Groaning, Izuru felt himself falling into the pleasure of those lips on his. All too soon, the lips pulled away and Izuru was left bereft. Blinking up with dazed eyes, Izuru saw the passion filled eye of Kenpachi looking down into his.
“Until tomorrow, Izuru-kun.” growled the large man before turning away to make his way back inside. Izuru stood there, still in shock from the kiss. Slowly Izuru did the same and turned his back on the division to make his way home, his body still thrumming from the soul searing kiss. Izuru knew one thing, he was not going to survive the month.
