Towards Eternity and Immortality

A/N: This story takes place in the same universe as That Good Night, and the beginning of this chapter should take place around the end of chapter 3 of That Good Night. I know this one's short, but the rest should be longer.

Towards Eternity and Immortality

Slowly, conscientiously, Byakuya picked up his tea and gingerly sipped the delicate liquid held therein. The brusquely moving shadows in the background formed an intimidating chiaroscuro with the flickering candlelight from the mantle. Byakuya replaced the tea in its proper resting place before beginning.

“Renji,” he said, carefully, cautiously, filled with a slight disdain and the edge of disappointment. “I have heard a most--” He paused to consider the appropriate word. “--unsettling, rumor concerning you, and your boyfriend.” He sent a piercing glance at his vice-captain. “Or, should I say, your ex-boyfriend, if certain other rumors are to be believed.”

Renji, for his part, cowered under his captain's disapproval.

“It is not generally my way,” he continued, “to interfere in my subordinates' love-lives. Where inter-divisional relations are at stake, however, I draw the line. You realize, of course, that one Izuru Kira is the highest ranking officer of the third division?”

Renji nodded.

“Considering your actions, I highly doubt that you do. For instance, I have been informed—I shall not say by whom—that a certain vice-captain was found beaten in an alleyway by one Ichigo Kurosaki. And that same source also identified the attacker: you.”

Renji looked away from his captain.

“You will look at me when I speak to you, is that clear?”

“Yes, sir,” Renji said as he redirected his gaze where his captain had instructed.

Stern eyes stared coolly back at him. “I shall not abide such behavior within my own division. It is beneath us. Do you understand?”

“Yes, sir.”

“I would normally demote an officer for such an offense, but I shall not, in this case. I don't think that you know how deeply disappointed I am in your behavior. But I shall make you see, do you understand? That shall be your punishment: to understand.”

“Yes, sir.”

“You say 'yes, sir' this, and 'yes, sir' that, but I don't think you fully comprehend what I mean. You shall not leave here tonight until you understand, is that clear?”

“Yes, sir.”

“In that case, I have a story I should like to tell you.”
