So when his training takes a turn - the atmosphere becoming less aggressive and far more friendly - he isn't really surprised. Any number of things could happen, it's just a matter of which.
And yes, while not totally unexpected, it's still frustrating that he doesn't see it coming until it's already happening. Until he's already on his knees, leaning forward eagerly, just like every other time.
