Reflection

Chapter One

Orihime watched the couple through dull grey eyes as they laughed during lunch break. It was after the Winter War and instead of things getting better, they had gotten worse. All of her friends were happy and slowly falling into the daily routine of day-to-day high school life, but for Inoue everything was a living hell especially being submitted to watching the boy she was secretly in love with smiling and touching Rukia.

Sometimes she felt overwhelming guilt over her jealousy. Ichigo had never been hers, but she couldn’t help but feel as if something had been stolen from her. For years she had been harboring feelings for him and he had just turned around and fell in love with a girl that wasn’t even of their world. It was like a slap in the face to see them together everyday.

They walked home together, walked to school together and Orihime bet that they even slept together, considering that Rukia still slept in Ichigo’s closet.

Shaking her head of such thoughts, she daintily picked at her food with pink chopsticks, her mind running on numbing empty. It was nice to not think so much for a while. Sometimes she even allowed herself to indulge in girlish fantasies of the prince in shinning armor, Ichigo, coming to her rescue while the wicked witch Rukia is melting into a bloody puddle on the floor in rage at the fact that her spell of enchantment had been broken.

How she hated herself for thinking that way. She loved Rukia. It wasn’t a romantic love, but she deeply admired the girl who had easily offered her friendship and had even protected her in the past.

I should be happy if both her and Ichigo are. I feel so selfish!

Sniffing loudly, feeling the familiar sting of tears in her eyes, she didn’t notice that everyone had stopped their cheerful chattering to stop and look at her in concern.

“Ah… Orihime?” Tatsuki’s voice interrupted her dreadful thoughts.

“Huh!?” her head snapped up to look at the tomboy who was looking at her in almost maternal concern.

“Are you okay?” the other girl asked slowly as if Orihime had a hard time hearing.

“Yeah! Yeah! I’m perfectly fine!” waving her hands out in front of her, accidently raining some rice on her friends due to still having the chopsticks in her hand, she smiled brightly.

Tatsuki wasn’t fooled. She could read her like a book and had seen the tears brimming in Orihime’s dark ash-grey eyes.

“You sure?”

“Yeah…?” her reply came out as an unsure question and at that her friend’s eyes narrowed. Catching herself in the screw up as everyone watched their interaction, she smiled again, and “It-it’s just that I have been so tired lately with finals and then my brother’s anniversary is coming up…” the words just faded as everyone nodded in understanding. She hated having to lie to them when all she wanted to do is yell at the top of her lungs her love for Ichigo.

I shouldn’t love him… If he doesn’t love me, I shouldn’t waste my time.

Finishing her lunch slowly, she had the idea of skipping the rest of the day just to be in her apartment in blessed silence. That was all she needed, to stop feeling. Ichigo and Rukia had become a couple just three weeks earlier and it was driving her crazy seeing them together in all of their classes. Maybe if she just took one day off from it all, she would feel better. Well… it would work if she took ‘days off’ for the rest of her life.

Tatsuki had tried to convince her to meet someone else and that was a lot coming from the tomboy, since the girl pretty much beat up anyone that got close to her.

Closing up her bento box, she ignored the laughter of her companions and looked off at the breeze lifting the bare branches of the trees outside. It was too cold to go to the roof anymore, so they had decided to go to the ground floor to sit on the grass. Her emotions were like those trees… Barren and skeletal. How ironic that she would be feeling all of these things when they were there showing their love by holding hands and sitting so close together that their sides appeared to be wielded and hard to tell apart.

Maybe I doneed a boyfriend.

That was her last thought before the bell to recommence class rung, startling all of the students.
