Chapter 13
Nyx had indeed found her daughter and Uryuu together. Which had rapidly come to one very warm six year old butt, much theatrical screaming and adult laughter.
“You will put yourself in that chair and not move unless it’s to your grandmother or Morrigan, young lady. Understood?”
“Yes, Mama,” Cyan said with a pout.
“Be happy I don’t just send you home now.”
Cyan looked hurt and then very upset. “I want to go home but we only ever stay with the Amazon and I miss my friends and I don’t like it there and I want our old house back and I want you to come home and not be too tired to play and I want you to smile and not cry all the time and . . . and . . .” Cyan seemed to have finally run out of words due to crying.
Nyx was so stunned that it seemed she was temporarily rooted to the spot. It was Uryuu who moved to scoop the little girl up, holding her and murmuring little nonsense things he remembered his mother saying when he was this upset. Gods knew Ryuuken had never been terribly consoling so he was pulling from those long ago memories of his mother. He wasn’t sure when the little girl had managed to attach herself to his soul but the damage was already done and he didn’t think it was reversible at this point. Cyan held on to Uryuu for dear life, her little arms wrapped firmly around his neck.
“I just want Mama to be happy, Uryuu. Since Daddy died she’s not.”
Nyx finally snapped out of her stupor and moved to take her daughter from Uryuu. When the little girl lifted her head from Uryuu’s shoulder Nyx was suddenly struck by how amazingly similar the two of them looked. They really could have passed for father and daughter and for some reason that thought made her very uncomfortable. She took Cyan from Uryuu’s arms and sat in the chair, holding her daughter on her lap.
“I’m sorry, sweetie. I really didn’t think how you’d feel being dragged into another dimension that’s so different from the one you’re used to. Why didn’t you tell me you weren’t happy there?”
“It’s okay sometimes. Just not all the time and I thought you might be happier there since it’s where you grew up but then you weren’t and I never get to see you anymore and . . .”
“Okay, I think I understand. When we make sure Uryuu and his dad are safe we’ll go back for a while. Will that work for you?”
“Yeah! Thanks, Mama!” she said, hugging her so tightly Nyx wondered if she wasn’t trying to strangle her instead.
“I’m still mad at you though. You shouldn’t have dragged Uryuu here without telling me first.”
“I didn’t drag him he’s too big to drag anywhere and he can’t make himself light like Daddy used to.”
“You know what I mean, Cyan.”
“In her defense, Nyx, I really didn’t put up much of a fight,” Uryuu said, looking down at mother and daughter.
Nyx reached up and squeezed his hand. “Thank you for coming with her. It isn’t that I don’t trust her once she gets here but with everything going on with the Amazon, I worry.”
“It’s fine, Nyx. Really. I’ve had an interesting time here.”
Uryuu suddenly realized he was still holding Nyx’s hand and dropped it quickly, blushing to the roots of his hair.
Cyan frowned at her mother and Uryuu. They were acting like they didn’t like eachother or something and she knew that wasn’t true because she could feel it. She’d finally had enough and marched over to her grandmother and godmother, yanking impatiently on Brighd’s sleeve.
“Gramma, do something with Mama and Uryuu.”
“Exactly what do you want done with them, Cyan?” Brighd asked.
“Make ‘em act like they like each other cause they do.”
“Oh?” Brighd said, looking askance at Morrigan.
“Yeah. Plus they’re supposed to go find Aunt Ama’s gramma and they gotta act like they like each other or nobody’ll believe it cause Uryuu’s dad’s in trouble and they’re gonna hurt him if they don’t find her.”
“Did that make any sense to you?” Brighd said.
“Hell, I’m stunned she said it all in one breath,” Morrigan commented.
“Guys!”
“Okay, okay, small and evil one. We’ll fix it. Calm down,” Morrigan said before starting to walk away.
“What exactly are you planning on doing?” Brighd said, sounding amused.
“Fixing it,” Morrigan said before striding off to where Nyx and Uryuu were standing.
“Why do I have the bad feeling that Uryuu is going to need therapy after this,” Brighd mused.
Morrigan shook her head as she watched Nyx and Uryuu keep a three foot distance between each other at all times. Hells bells, anyone with eyes could tell they liked each other and there they were acting like a couple of junior high school teenagers. “Damn kids. Gotta point out everything for them,” she grumbled.
Nyx spotted Morrigan walking toward them with a look on her face that Nyx had hoped would never be directed at her. Why it was now was certainly a mystery because to the best of her knowledge she hadn’t done anything to warrant the scowl currently etched into the war goddess’ face. When the other woman got within speaking distance Nyx opened her mouth to ask what the problem was but didn’t get very far.
“Not a single damn word,” Morrigan snarled, making Nyx flinch a little. Both she and Uryuu were shocked to suddenly find themselves grabbed around the waist and dragged off to the sidelines of the festivities.
