Chapter 15

Brighd stopped Uryuu and Nyx halfway to the portal in the oak tree.

“I think I should go after her and not you two,” she said.

Nyx frowned at the older woman. “She’s my sister.”

“I’m aware of that, Nyx. But just now she’s nursing a broken heart and I do know something about healing,” Brighd said, smiling slightly. “If she’s unwilling to speak to me and wants either of you, I’ll come back and let you know. It isn’t as though the time will matter.”

“That’s true enough,” Nyx said thoughtfully, watching as Brighd turned and walked away from them. She turned back to Uryuu to find him frowning. “What is it?”

“What did she mean by the time wouldn’t matter?”

Nyx shrugged. “This is a pocket dimension. A place out of the slipstream of linear time. We could literally spend months here and when we went back to the Amazon’s dimension it would be as though very little time had passed. Before you ask, we came looking for you and Cyan because the individuals set to watch the both of you figured out you’d given them the slip. Knowing Cyan, I’m quite sure that happened long before you entered this dimension.”

“Doubtlessly,” he said absently. He was pondering the possibilities of using an alternate dimension to get Ryuuken out of harm’s way.

“No, we can’t use this space to smuggle Ryuuken out,” Nyx said as though she’d read his mind. "You have to leave whatever way you came in."

“How do you do that?” Uryuu asked, looking at her with a mixture of awe and worry.

Nyx shrugged. “It’s what I’d be thinking if it were my father in the same situation. Though I tend to get along with mine better than you do yours.”

Uryuu snorted. “That doesn’t take much.”

“Exactly why do you hate him so much, Uryuu?”

“It’s a long story. I’ll tell you sometime when we’re both bored beyond measure.”

Any further comment was cut off by the blare of what sounded like trumpets. Uryuu looked to Nyx, one eyebrow going up in question.

“The tournaments are starting.”

“Tournaments?”

Nyx nodded. “Yes. Several in different places around the grounds. Kind of a warm up before the Oak and Holly King battle,” she said, tugging him along toward where crowds were starting to gather.

Nyx spotted Cyan in possibly the best seat in the place, balanced atop Sado’s shoulders. She pointed it out to Uryuu who laughed and said that at least she’d found a spot where she could see everything. Nyx laughed and they made their way through the throng to stand next to Sado and Ichigo. Renji was standing across the mock battlefield from Morrigan. Both very much looking ready to get the party started.

“Nyx! Come spot me,” Morrigan called.

“Like you need anyone to spot you,” Nyx called back teasingly.

“Yeah, I know I’m the best but bring your ass anyway.”

Nyx shrugged and reluctantly, though she would have never admitted it to anyone else, let go of Uryuu’s hand. She made her way over to the war goddess, who was standing with one hand braced on her hip and grinning.

Morrigan slung her arm around Nyx as soon as she got close to her and grinned wider.

“Y’know, if I were you, I’d ignore whatever the hell kind of stupid crap the Amazon and Quincy have got going on between one another and be all over that boy.”

“Morrigan!” Nyx said, sounding scandalized.

“Oh, please! You know you want him.”

Nyx glanced over to where Uryuu had taken over being in charge of Cyan. The little girl was now perched on his shoulders and had her hands in his hair to anchor herself. Nyx thought it would have made a cute picture. She shook her head a little and turned back to Morrigan.

“I’d have to be dead not to want him,” Nyx said with a heavy sigh.

“So, go get him,” Morrigan prompted.

“It isn’t that simple, Morrigan.”

“Sure it is. You want him, he wants you. What’s complicated about it?”

“If he were anyone else in the world it wouldn’t be. He’s the last of the Quincy, add to it he’s also of royal blood.”

Morrigan snorted and twirled the spear she was holding. “Royal blood never stopped you and Bane from getting married and having Cyan. The rest is all politics and bullshit. Go tie him to a tree somewhere, cover him in honey and lick it off.”

“Morrigan!”

“Don’t Morrigan me, girlie. You’ve got time while you’re here, make the most of it.”

“Is that what you’re planning on doing with the Soul Reaper Captain after your sparring match with Renji?” Nyx said, looking across the field to where Jyuushiro was giving Renji last minute ideas.

“Oh, hell yes!”
