Chapter 8

Nyx stood and turned to Uryuu. “Can you control your energy bolts, Uryuu?”

Uryuu nodded. “Yes, why?”

“I need you to send one, the more power the better, wrap it around Ryuuken.”

Uryuu looked startled for a moment then he nodded as understanding dawned on him. “It will act as a cover for when you release Ryuuken’s power.”

Nyx nodded. “Yes. If someone notices the power flare and they will, I can assure you, it can be said that you were upset about how your father had been treated and it was an accident,” she said, then smiled a little. “No matter if the real reason is you being inclined to start firing arrows at him for not telling you about all of this.”

Uryuu’s eyes narrowed and his lips twitched, trying to turn upward a bit.

“I believe I like her,” Ryuuken said dryly, standing up and seeming completely unconcerned with the fact that he was stark naked. “She’s evil.”

“Flattery will get you everywhere, Dr. Ishida,” Nyx said, stepping out of the path between father and son and walking around behind Ryuuken. “Give me your hands.”

Ryuuken put his hands obediently behind his back and looked at his son. “Well?”

“Do you really trust me?” Uryuu questioned, summoning his bow.

“As much as I trust anyone,” Ryuuken remarked.

“On my mark, Uryuu,” Nyx said. “Three, two, one. Mark!”

Uryuu fired off a shot that wrapped around Ryuuken and Nyx several times at the exact moment she released the glowing red bands from around Ryuuken’s wrists. Everything in the small room rocked and spun but everyone stood steady on their feet, including Nyx. This was odd to both Ryuuken and Uryuu because they had noticed in similar circumstances, everyone else tended to be on the floor.

Ryuuken glanced over his shoulder and one eyebrow rose slightly. “Tokarev informed me that your late husband was one of the Sidhe. I’m guessing that’s why you can withstand power surges.”

“He was and it is. Your wrists will still show the bands and have enough pulses of restraining power to certain people to convince them you’re no threat. It’s merely a glamoury and you’ll be able to use your abilities to their full extent without any trouble.”

“Your Highness, quarters have been prepared for the males as per the Commander’s . . . ah, request,” one of the younger officers said after coming into the room, glancing uneasily around at Ichigo, Renji and Sado.

“Excellent. Thank you so much,” Amaterasu said, suddenly all cool dignity. “You may lead the way.”

Renji shivered slightly as he was reminded of Byakuya in that moment. But Amaterasu was far above the noble Captain of the soul society. As an Empress elect, he was stunned she’d even looked at him, probably never would have if she knew where he came from. No matter what he did, he would always be a stray dog from the 78th district. He sighed heavily, he had to stop that train of thought before it derailed him completely and he got depressed.

Ama frowned slightly when she saw strange flashes of memory coming from Renji. Memories of being so cold everything went numb, of starving and stealing to get enough to try filling a belly that always seemed to be empty, of being kicked and hit, being hurt and no one cared. She blinked back the tears that had suddenly formed in her eyes.

Renji staggered back a little as he suddenly found himself with arms full of crying Empress elect. He looked at the other two men in the room who shrugged and shook their heads, not having any idea what was going on either. The officer who had come to take them to their sleeping quarters for the night was staring at the Empress elect as though she had lost all reason.

Renji patted Ama awkwardly on the back, completely at a loss for what to do in this situation. The women of Soul Society didn’t cry much and if they did it was a precursor to someone getting injured. Badly. He finally put his arms around her and it felt like he was having the breath squeezed out of him as she started crying harder.

“Aw, c’mon, quit it. You’re makin’ me crazy here ‘cause I don’t know what the hell you’re cryin’ for,” Renji finally said in exasperation.

Ama took a deep breath and her tears died down considerably. She looked up at Renji’s confused face and almost laughed at the expression. Nyx had always told her that men as a general rule did not take women crying and being upset well as it usually wasn’t something they could immediately do something about. She glanced around and found the other two men in the room looking just as bewildered as Renji did and after that she did laugh. Earning an even more baffled look from the men and the officer still standing in the doorway. She gave Renji one last hug before letting go and turning to the officer, wiping the tears away before speaking.

“Lead the way.”

When the men were settled into their quarters for the night the young officer turned to Ama.

“Your Highness, someone was sent from Soul Society to negotiate the release of the young men.”

“Why? What does Soul Society have to do with this?”

“Apparently, the one with the spiky orange hair is a substitute shinigami and the one you were . . . er . . . crying on is vice captain of their Division six. The negotiations were put off until tomorrow considering it’s so late and most of the Council is asleep. He was very polite about everything and asked if there was a place where he could rest away from others.”

“Why?”

“It seems he has some sort of malady of the lungs and has coughing spells. He said he didn’t want to inconvenience anyone by keeping them up all night listening to it.”

“I see.”

“Will you be attending the meetings, Your Highness?”

“Yes. I will be. Thank you for the information.”

The officer bowed to her and left. Ama walked along one of the many paths to the central garden, needing to think a bit. She already knew what was going to happen at the meetings tomorrow if she didn’t intervene. The Council would calmly hand over Ichigo, Renji and probably Sado to the man from Soul Society without so much as a protest because they were simply extras. They had what they were after in Uryuu and Ryuuken Ishida so the others were excess baggage.

Her eyes narrowed a little and a hard glint came into them. They could have the other two, they at least were human and had no long term connection to Soul Society as a whole save for the past few years. But Renji was another subject all together. She’d be damned if she’d willingly send him back to the place that had treated him so badly even though he’d proved himself over and over to them. They weren’t getting him back. Period.
